Drainage and Landscaping Near a Seawall

The strip behind a seawall is structural territory. Changes to grade, drainage and loading can matter even when they look like ordinary landscaping.

Keep water pathways visible

Roof discharge, irrigation, paver slope and yard drains can concentrate water behind the wall. Do not cover drains or seal weep paths without understanding the design. Persistent wet areas deserve investigation.

Added weight creates surcharge

Raised beds, stone, stored materials, vehicles and equipment add load. Pools and structures require much more detailed evaluation. Ask how close-to-wall loading was considered in the original or proposed design.

Vegetation is not automatically good or bad

Roots can hold surface soil, seek drainage paths, disturb joints or complicate access depending on species and location. Mangroves are regulated. Avoid cutting or removal before confirming requirements.

Restoration after seawall work

Plans should show finished grade, drainage, filter material, compaction and restoration. Returning pavers or irrigation without correcting the water path can recreate the original symptom.
