Common pathways to investigate
Why adding fill can be deceptive
New soil may disappear through the same pathway. The surface looks restored while the subsurface void continues to expand. A durable repair generally identifies the source, closes or filters the pathway, restores appropriate material and verifies drainage.
Document without entering the hazard
Photograph from stable ground, note dimensions using distant reference points, record tide/rain timing and mark whether the hole returns after filling. Do not probe, enter or excavate a void when its extent is unknown.
Keep people away from an open void, sudden drop, actively moving wall or undermined hardscape. Do not enter a hole or place vehicles, materials or equipment close to a distressed edge. Obtain site-specific professional guidance.
Possible repair families
Depending on the mechanism, work may involve joint/filter repair, drainage correction, controlled grouting, soil replacement, toe/scour protection, wall stabilization or replacement. Injection or grout is not automatically appropriate; uncontrolled material can move into surface waters or conceal an unresolved structural problem.
