Map the movement before naming a repair
Is one panel displaced or a long run curved? Did the top move while the toe stayed fixed? Is the cap separated? Are returns or neighboring walls restraining the ends? Surveyed alignment and elevations may be more reliable than visual judgment alone.
Why anchors cannot be assumed
The type, spacing, depth and condition of anchors may not match a generic detail. Repairs that add anchors or braces require knowledge of soil, loads, utilities and available anchorage area. Unplanned excavation behind a distressed wall can reduce support.
When replacement enters the discussion
Replacement may become more rational when movement is progressive, multiple primary components have limited remaining capacity, access to repair is impractical or a repair would leave the original system carrying loads it can no longer reliably resist.
Keep people away from an open void, sudden drop, actively moving wall or undermined hardscape. Do not enter a hole or place vehicles, materials or equipment close to a distressed edge. Obtain site-specific professional guidance.
