Riprap and Revetments

Riprap is not simply a pile of rocks. A functioning revetment depends on slope, graded stone, filter layers, toe stability and transitions at each end.

How revetments differ from vertical walls

Angular rock or other armor placed on a slope can break and dissipate wave energy rather than reflect it from a smooth vertical face. The tradeoff is a wider footprint and different access, navigation and environmental considerations.

Critical hidden layers

Filter fabric or graded aggregate beneath armor helps keep native soil from washing through while relieving water. Toe stone supports the lower edge. Missing or undersized elements can allow settlement and unraveling even when the top layer appears substantial.

When “add more rock” is incomplete

Dumping stone over an eroding bank may cover the symptom without correcting slope, filters, toe or end transitions. A repair plan should explain stone size, layer thickness, foundation preparation and how adjacent shoreline is protected.
