Where concrete earns consideration
Concrete can provide substantial stiffness, accept formed caps and integrate with docks or other improvements when engineered as a complete system. Its mass and familiar construction can be useful, but installation access and handling requirements may influence feasibility and price.
What tends to deteriorate
- Cracks that admit water and chlorides to reinforcement
- Spalling where expanding corrosion breaks concrete away
- Joints that open or lose soil-retaining function
- Caps that crack, settle or separate from panels
- Hidden anchors, connections and toe support
Repair is a cause-and-extent question
Patching a spall can restore cover and appearance, but only after loose material, reinforcement condition and contamination are evaluated. Sealing a joint may help when the joint is the soil-loss path, but will not correct wall movement. Structural movement or widespread section loss may change the repair-versus-replacement analysis.
Questions for a proposed concrete system
- Is the face precast, cast in place or a composite of components?
- How are panels connected to the cap and anchoring system?
- How are joints filtered or sealed while permitting drainage?
- What design exposure and corrosion protection assumptions are used?
- How will heavy material reach the waterfront?
